The Trump government is contemplating new limitations on the Chinese AI lab DeepSeek that would restrain it from purchasing Nvidia’s AI chips and possibly prevent Americans from using its AI services, The New York Times stated on Wednesday.
The limitations are part of the Trump government’s endeavor to contend with China on AI. Months after DeepSeek startled both Silicon Valley and Wall Street, U.S. officials appear to be evaluating several choices to restrict China’s access to American technologies and consumers.
On Tuesday, the White House acted to curb more of Nvidia’s AI chip sales to China, reinforcing rules created by the Biden government.
DeepSeek’s renown among U.S. AI developers has surged in recent months, and the startup’s economical pricing has compelled Silicon Valley to provide advanced AI models at reduced costs.
There are remaining questions, however, around if DeepSeek participated in IP piracy to produce some of its more economical models. OpenAI has claimed that the Chinese lab replicated its models, breaching OpenAI’s terms of use.
